Biohazard Transportation Requirements

The process of transporting biohazardous materials is critical to the safety and protection of WVU employees.  Individuals needing to transport or ship samples must be trained to do so.  Refer to WVU Biosafety Manual Chapter 3: Training for training requirements. 

Transporting samples between lab in same building

  • Biohazardous materials must be transported using secondary containment.

Transporting samples between buildings on campus

  • Biohazardous materials must be transported using secondary containment.
  • A List of Contents must be generated
  • Biohazard materials are prohibited to be transported on public transit such as the PRT or University bus services.

Shipping samples

  • Biohazardous materials must be shipped in accordance with the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods
