WVU Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) conducts routine, University-wide laboratory safety audits. The goal of the audits is to promote a culture of safety, reduce the risk of injury to researchers and students, protect WVU property, and ensure compliance with Federal, State, and University rules and regulations. The audit program also serves to promote a positive working relationship between EH&S and the laboratory researchers by working towards the common goal of reducing fines and actions from outside regulatory agencies.
During these audits, the applicable areas of safety to be reviewed will include:
Documentation and Emergency Signage
Housekeeping and General Safety
Chemical Hygiene and Safety
Gas Cylinder Management
Hazardous Waste Management
Radiation and Laser Safety
Fire and Electrical Safety
Laboratory Safety Equipment
Reviewing Your Audit
Audits are conducted using cloud-based software by Campus Optics. When an audit is completed, a report will be emailed through Campus Optics (notfications@campusoptics.com) to the responsible contact for the space. The email will contain a link to the audit report, which contains a list of issues that were identified during the audit. After reviewing the report, the responsible contact must sign-in to Campus Optics and navigate to the Issues tab to access the issues assigned to them.
After correcting any issues, the responsible contact will click on the “Actions” menu and click “Mark as Complete.” Responsible contacts will also post a comment and upload pictures to show how it was corrected before selecting “Update Issue”.
If additional time is needed to complete the action (e.g., equipment or supplies need to be purchased, or a Facilities work order has been initiated), an email request for an extension can be submitted which will be evaluated for approval.
If you choose to log in to Campus Optics (https://wvu.campusoptics.com) directly, select the “Sign in at your institution” option, then proceed through WVU’s two-factor authentication system.
